The shortage of non-commercial galleries in Glasgow made it difficult for less established artists to get their work seen. is So many artists collaborate to run initiative committed to encouraging and supporting artists by providing them with a free and independent space in which to exhibit.

Free space available in a city depends to a large extent on the economy.
During a boom period, people spend a lot of money, so there are many shops and other retail service providers. The property prices are high. There is a lot of free space during a recession, when shops shut down.
